I have a 9.9 evinrude that will start up cold on 1-2 pulls. I can then run it around all day as long as I don't let it die. It will hold a high idle OK. But if it dies it takes a long time pulling for it to restart.

At idle it will pump water fairly well but it is not as strong as the 15 evinrude that I have. some one told me to used compressed air or a wire up the tell tale to try to clear some blockage?

any help would be very much appreciated

Do a standard check, spark compression fuel when it's warmed up. How hot does the motor get? My 9.9 doesn't spray water out the hole like a garden hose, it come out more like a pee stream and it runs at around 115 degrees which is plenty cool.

When was the last time the engine was tuned up? You need to check compression, spark and fuel delivery. If you are having a idle and start problem it might be time to over haul the carb.

Does the tell-tale pressure increase with RPM? If you have very little tell-tale at idle and a very strong tell-tale at higher speed, it might be time to replace water pump. With the engine running, take a piece of trimmer string and try to clean the tell-tale tube out, and see if tell-tale pressure increases.
Has the water pump been replaced lately, if the pump is more than a couple of years old it might be time to replace pump anyway.

Could also be getting too hot causing electronic components to overheat, coils, pickup, powerpack. Is it hot under the hood when you try and restart it, can you touch the head without being burnt?

Re: 1990s 9.9 idle and starting issue

I did a compression test after I did a head gasket about 2 months ago. It was about 115 on both. I just put a new carb rebuild kit in about 5 weeks ago. The person that was using the engine just told me that he was running about 12:1 in the gas. So I changed the plugs and it is better but still not great.

I still think I need to do an impeller and I like the idea of using weedwacker line.

thanks guys

12:1???? Is he nutz??? Do another comp test, that motor might be plugged solid. These motors are supposed to run 50:1 oil/gas mix.

You might have to run it awhile to flush out all that oil in the crankcase.

Or do a decarb, wouldn't you think Daviet? 12:1 is almost 3 times the amount of oil required.

actually, some of the smaller engines in 90's came with 100-1 suggestion,we only ran 50-1.Its like running it on diesal fuel.Get your fuel to 50 -1 ,flush the old gas out and see how it goes then. After you run it a bit try the decarb too.change plugs

Re: 1990s 9.9 idle and starting issue

Well I premixed some 50:1 it is running so much better. It took about 5 min of running to get it to stop smoking but it finally did. It still likes to stall if I let it idle down but that may just be a carb adjustment. I am going to do the decarb this weekend because it can't hurt.

thanks again for the help

I'll bet he was told 24:1 for break in, and then "half that after". Easy enough to figure out 12:1 for the mixture. D'oh!

The guy who did it just decided to split a gallon of oil between 2 tanks. There was no logic involved. "I figured that would just be enough."

One of the engines(Evinrude 15) just recovered faster than the other.

And you won't need to change the plugs after you decarb it, they should be nice and clean after, you using seafoam?? It's on my agenda this weekend to do the 90.
