Got a kicker along with my 150 hp. Kicker is a 1991 or two (15hp tiller) by my best guess. Tag is unreadable, I do have a serial# wrote down at work that I got off of a freeze plug, Will post tomorrow. going to rehab this motor back to new. It has good compression and spark, start switch sucks, but I did get it to work with a soak in contact cleaner, gonna have to get a new one eventually.
so I got a new kill switch as that was missing, water pump kit and a carb kit too. PO had this thing butchered up to run remotely, kill switch on transom, lawnmower throttle cable, the neutral safety linkage was broken. I will be rigging it up for remote also after getting it back to original configuration and then I will add a solenoid in the boat and an ignition switch and figure out how to actuate the choke with a RC solenoid and run the throttle with one also, ala trollmaster.
Even with the mods I will have it set up so I can remove it and use it on another boat also. First question I have is the ignition switch is obviously a high amperage switch, no solenoid on the motor. What amp switch do I need? How high are the cranking amps on this motor?
Start with that, thanks guys!

The solenoid for a 1991 15hp starter motor is 584128 or Sierra 18-5813.
It may be over 100 cranking amps, so you really need to use a solenoid.

The starting solenoid is listed in the intake manifold section.....if you reinstall one the ign switch does not need to be anything special.

Sure looks like mine did not come with a solenoid, heavy wire factory switch, also has recoil start. No bracket for the solenoid and the wires all fit just right the way it is. Kinda stumped as to model and year. Serial # is G2653518

If putting the start button/'switch' on engine, no need for a solenoid. However if going for a remote start, solenoid is recommended, but not a must providing cables are of correct size.

Ya I am going to get creative with the remote start!! For now just want to get back to original and start from there!!

Next question, proper gap for the spark plug????

SPARK PLUG, Champion QL77J4
Thanks!!

Mag, I'm signing on to keep close watch on this project, it's perfect!

See my Evinrude 15hp will be going through just about the same rehab as yours:D

My ignition switch isn't working at all and I'd like to set it up as a remote start too. Also, I want to have my engine serve dual purpose - kicker for the Islander and tiller for my 14 footer.

Anyway, you definitely have my attention:) (though I'll be of no real help, sorry:rolleyes:)

A small note concerning your 'dual' use.
The engines (later versions) using throttle cable from tiller handle to engine, normally the cable need to be disconnected from engine when using remote. The older ones with geared shafts, handle may be left as is. If you want to make the swap as easy as possible, be sure you have the old system.

I don't mean to hijack Mag's thread here but for my set up I'm just going to use the tiller handle for throttle (with extension) (and extension for the F N R shift). I just want the electric start to be remote is all (so I don't have to hop out onto the swim platform to start).

Sorry mag, your thread again:)

NO PROBLEM, great info for mo too!! Somehow PO had the throttle running remote ala lawnmower style and my tiller cable still seems to function fine, going to do some investigating. Might explain why the idle control on the end of the tiller handle is broken????

Could have been rope start originally and had the electric start added by a PO.....model number would confirm exactly what it started life as.....have you checked the silver disc on the powerhead for one or is that where you got the serial number from?

Re: 1991-2 15hp electric start

Worked on her tonight, put the carb back together with a repair kit (rebuild) and also swapped out the impeller and housing. Also rewired the kill switch, got to deal with three broken mounting screws for that. Will post pics once I find my dang camera cord.

Re: 1991-2 15hp electric start

So, run it in a barrel, tell tale plugged, cleared it. Thermostat O ring leaking, replaced it. Fires right up and idles so so, in gear gotta have some throttle and likes the choke on partially. Man, not my first carb rodeo, it has gotta be clean. what other options are there. Put it on the flat bottom and ran it, little rough, reliable though. Gets up and goes, needs the choke to get it revving and then it runs good at speed, no miss. no choke needed.
Go through carb again or could I have a crank seal leaning it out? What ya all think?

OK, this may or may not help ya...

Mine had very similar symptoms to what you just described there ^^^.

I took it in to the engine tech guy near me and he did a whole carb job. The major issue for me was a hairline crack in the plastic top. It was very fine and became obvious only after he pointed it out to me. This seems to be a common problem with our vintage OB's.

Check out what Leeroy has to say:

So, I am hoping this will cure my carb issue.
