i have a 25 hp it is very hard to start i have to pull the rope very far out and pull it fast. thats the only way i get fire to the plugs. if i just pull it normally i got get any fire to the plugs. once i get it cranked it runs very rough (seems like one cyclinder not fire to good; i get build up on the top cyclinder) what could be causing this? stator, spark box, coil ???????????

any help thanks.

Have you pulled thay top plug wire with the engine running? You can remove the wire and see if engine runs any different, if it don't then you isolated the problem to that wire/ coil assembly. If it does change and runs rougher or whatever the case may be then you have more complex problem. For instance, if your confident the bottem plug is the only one firing, and you remove that wire, the engine should die, if both are are firing, and you remove one wire, the engine should struggle. If you pull a wire and theres no change, than thats the one thats bad. Then you need to check the voltage from the trigger to the coil and everything in between to see where the power stops, then you identify the faulty part. And as mentioned before, a compression check would'nt hurt. Engine at operating temps...throttle open and the plugs removed. Pull it about 6 times per cylinder. If you find you do have good spark, and the ignition system is good.....tune her up....link and sync, carb rebuild.

Oh yea....also a merc 25, 2-stroke is never going to idle smooth and quiet, more like a nascar sitting in the pits. I have two of them, and even with everything perfect they will shake the boat. The little 4 strokes can sit and laugh with they low emissions, twice the weight motors, and quiet operation, but a 2-stroke 25 will blow them off the water.

yes i know it runs about 30mph on a 15x42 boat i have. it was running a little rougher than normal with a little miss to it now i can even get it to crank. the only time i get fire to the plugs is when i pull the rope very far out and fast.

Check the ignition system.....complex but take your time and follow the path of the wiring system and you will figure it out. I would at least check the carb and the fuel pump first though (built into the carb), to rule out trash or gum causing these effects, and maybe timing. There are some really good techs on here that can give you voltage specs if you need them. I know sometimes a part with a just a little low voltage can throw everything for a loop.

i did a test on the ignition system the stator is showing low resistance. i guess this is my problem. i also swapped the switch box with another motor and it runs fine the switch box. Bad stator will change as soon as i get a chance.
