1991 3.0L Mercruiser missing timing marks

[North of 60]

This engine in my Bayliner is in need of timing but the timing marks look like the previous owner scrubbed them with something and I can not read the numbers on it. The mark bar has five valleys and six peaks. Does anybody have a picture of the timing marks so that I can time this engine?

I have a 1989 4.3, hopefully it's the same on yours. Sorry about the pic, big pain to shrink it to fit so it will uplaod on here. Mine was painted over rust but I was able to make out some numbers so I painted the marks with a white line. The lower white line on the big indent is 0 deg. Next point up is 4 and the next one up from that with the other white line is 8 (closest to the top of pic) Hope this helps! I just timed my engine and it is right on by my marks, my timing is 8 deg. BTDC

These pictures don't really show the timing rack that i have in my boat. Unfortunately, I have no obvious deep valley that tells me where zero degrees is. I would like to post a picure of the tab, how do I do this here? I do not have a web site to attach the picture from.

Wow, never seen one like that. My brother in law has a 3.0, he's up in Ore. and I'm in So. Cal., but I will ask him to take a pic of his and I will try to post it asap. In the meantime, hopefully someone else will come thru for ya! And don't feel too bad, I have a heck of a time getting my pics small enough to post on here and my teenage son moved out so he's not here to figure it out for me! :redface:

Scrape all the paint off the tab and you will be able to see the numbers.

Thanks Don S. and liquidlew. I did what you said Don and there it was on the tab. I am providing a picture for future people. 0 in the middle with 4 above and 4 below. Now to install the chartplotter.
