The problem I have is from time to time when I'm
in reverse the gear shift handle will creep forward and it will pop out of gear. Is there an adjustment on the linkage to solve this annoying problem?

Hi Fenwick and welcome!

You might take a look under the hood at the shift lever assembly. There is a spring loaded detent ball in the assemble that is supposed to hold the shift lever in gear. If you cannot physically feel this detent when you shift, the ball or spring may be gone. Below is the link to the BRP site. Click on engine diagrams and find your model. Look for shift and throttle linkage diagram. This will give you a break down of the parts and the detent ball. Picture is easier than words..... :)

http://www.evinrude.com/en-US/

Give us a shout if you have any questions....thanks.

OBJ Thanks for the prompt reply.
I did pop the cover and checked out the assembly you are discribing. When I shift it forward, I can feel the pressure from the spring. But when I put it in reverse it is not as evident.I also should point out that when the shift lever is in nuetral. I will move the prop while I am moving the shift lever,There is more travel in the lever when I shift into reverse than forward.(before it engages.)Is this an adjustment issue?

Have never had to adjust one of these shifters Fen.....but just a suggestion here....disconnect the shift rod from the shift lever and manually shift the engine. This is to see if your travel into reverse increases. Do the same for forward. The end of the shift rod is adjustable if any adjustments are needed.

Has there been any work done on the lower unit....like water pump work...that the lower unit had to be dropped? If so, it's possible the shift shaft could have gotten out of height adjustment.

OBJ,

Many thanksfor your helpful info. It's taken me awhile to get back to working on the motor.I think the previous owner might have droped the lower unit a some point.I replaced the water pump and checked the length of the shift rod. Once it was the correct length, all seems to be working well!!!! Again many thanks, people with your knowledge help us greenhorns out alot!!!!!!

Fenwick
