1991 88spl drive shaft

So I have this 88spl a buddy gave me and I figured that I would try to get it running right again. Hey it was a free motor and I have had it running just not good. So I started by tearing off the carbs disassembling and soaking them. Then I went for the water pump well when I got the lower unit off there was a some rust on the driveshaft. Thats ok ! Until I go to remove the water pump and the impeller will not come off. The brass bushing was froze to the shaft so I had to cut the impeller off I cleaned up the drive shaft but the woodruf key is gone.

Now from what I see it looks like I can get a new water pump back on there but the parts break down is not clear enough can any one tell me if the woodruf key is a seperate piece that you put into the notch in the driveshaft or is it supposed to be part of the shaft that dont remove.Seems like this would be a common problem.

Anybody with some thoughts.

your woodruff key is part #331107. if you bought a rebuild kit it should be in it. if you just got the impeller you will have to get the key separately. don't forget the shaft seal and O ring on top of the drive shaft. you can view a complete parts diagram and list here, just follow the prompts. So the impeller sticking to the shaft is a normal thing to encounter. I do see that the kit has a key with it but dont see a pic of the key. I was going to buy a hole new water pump w/ housing I just did not want to buy something if it needed a driveshaft. So is the key juat a -half circle that fits in there to make up the rest of the shaft and hold the impeller in place

yes but don't use just any type of key. it fits in the slot of the drive shaft, and the slot in the impeller.
