Just cannot figure out how to remove the lower unit so I can replace impeller..I have removed the 3 bolts and the lower unit drops about 3/4". I have tried putting the gears in F/N/R and still it won't drop. Cannot see where there is any linkage to undo. Do I need to remove the starter to get to the top linkage?

Here are your components. http://www.boats.net/parts/search/M...9/GEAR HSG (DRIVE SHAFT) DESIGN II/parts.html. I don't see anything else but you can take a look. The drive shaft may just be stuck in the power-head. Try turning the motor up-side down, spraying some lube on the shaft and gently drive some wooden wedges between the two housings. Unless you see something else it will pop loose.

The drive shaft appears to slide up and down on the splines up in the head. If you zoom in on # 36 (top of the shift linkage, there appears to be 2 'screw' holes.
Next, I am going to remove the starter and see if there the shift mechanism is attached on top.

Success..:
Found out that you MUST remove the cover to the carb so that you can get to both bolts on the starter and remove it. At the top of the shift rod is a single hole which has a pin going through it held on by a clip. To pop the clip up, you have to have the engine in reverse. This rotates the base of the clip upwards. To be able to remove the clip/pin you have to put the engine in forward which rotated the clip/pin upwards. The gear assembly just pulls out allowing you to get at the impeller.
