1991 Bayliner Capri Bowrider

Hi Everyone,

This is my first post on iboats, so thanks for viewing. Just bought a major project boat, see spec's below;

1991 20' Bayliner Capri Bowrider
4.3L Mercruiser V6
Alpha I Outdrive

My first big question, does anyone know how to remove the starter motor w/o yanking the engine?

Just bought a major project boat,

Welcome aboard!

Since it is a major project boat maybe it would be good to pull the engine anyway.

Otherwise, yep, it is a tight squeeze in most boats and you simply do it by feel. Do you know where the starter bolts are? Some boat designs make it nearly impossible without pulling the engine or other components.

What is your idea of a major project? I know what mine is and that motor would be coming out righ after the interior. Regardless.

It is not hard to pull the engine in a boat, unlike a newer car. Do yourself a favor and just plan on taking it out. This gives you an oportunity to see much more about the engine, drive, and other components. Besides, if the stringers need replaced, it is coming out anyhow.

Thanks for the response!

Not sure which way the bolts are oriented but can try and figure it out today. It is definitely a tight fit any way you look at it.

Sounds like it's not especially difficult to pull the motor out based on some other threads that I've looked at? Accurate assumption, I am pretty handy?

Good advise Thad, I will plan on pulling the motor.

The stringers, floors and the like are all sound as I've gone over them with a fine tooth comb.....those are about the only parts on the entire boat that don't require attention.

It is a major project, and the first thing I did was gut the interior leaving only the carpeting (which is in surprisingly good shape as well).

What's the best way to lift the motor, park it in a barn and string some chain and a winch to the upper joists? Is there a less complicated way?

Well, you have a barn, do you have a bucket loader? That would be my first option. Second would be a cherry picker. Of course that only works if the barn has good concrete left in her or you have a picker.
Lastly, yes, a block and tackle will work just fine. Then you just need to move the boat forward. Make sure and check the integrity of the beam/joist before you do anything.

As long as you are going to be that far into it, you would be time and money ahead to replace all the hoses, belts, plugs, and anything else of question before you put it back in.

On my old Bayliner Capri, I had to take the housing off around the engine in order to have enough room to take off the starter. I really doubt you need to pull the engine to replace it.

Post a picture of what you are dealing with here and maybe someone will have some suggestions.

Also note that you will need to remove the outdrive to pull the engine. Neither job is difficult. If you go to the top of the page, you will see an "adults only" sticky - in there you will find a link to download the appropriate manual for you engine / drive setup. It will help tremendously.

if you pull that motor you will need an alignment tool to put it back in.....

they are a specialty item

Wow, Thanks for all the advice!!!!

I have the barn, it is sound (floors and all) so this might be the best way to go. I don't have the equipment though, but can use thew barn structure for some help.

Removing the housing around the motor is one way to go but all of that needs to be cut out and then rebuilt and I'm not sure that's the road I want to go down.

As far as the alignment tool I believe I can turn down a steel rod to spec that will suit that purpose.

Again, thanks for all the advice this is my first boat project and I'm guessing I will have a few more questions....ha

Look carefully and you will find that the housing around the motor is probably screwed in place. If there is carpeting, you may need to search for the screws as they will be hiding in the carpeting...mine were.

There are some screws here and there, however, it is a combo of being screwed in and fiberglassed to the hull and transom....I will look closer though, maybe I am missing something.

Why don't you head up to the Adults Only sticky at the top of this forum, then download the manuals for your engine and drive. They will cover about 95% of your questions.

Thanks Don,

I began downloading yesterday, trying to figure which portions I need to download.
Took a closer look at the engine last night and she needs to be pulled and, at least, partially rebuilt. The manual will be getting much use.

Good luck, hope all goes well.

Just remember this. When something starts to go awry, step back, have a drink and think about it. I find this very helpful. I figure it out and get the job done without creating MORE work for myself in the process.

I have also found that sliding a 4' steel pipe around the wrench helps loosen those stubborn bolts, just like slicing butter

Before taking the engine out, look very carefully at how you might be able to get the starter out without doing this. Take a picture for us of your configuration and maybe we can help here. There a lot of these boats out there. I am sure someone will chime in on their procedure.
