not too sure about starter, BUT Either IS BAD
on a two stroke motor, think about it there is no oil mixed in with either.
keep posting
Darian

Darien is correct. Starting fluid with ether and no oil is deadly on 2 stroke engines.

Your problem could be in bad connections in the battery/starter cables. Remove, clean and reinstall all of them, with particular attention to the ground cable connection to the engine block.

Good luck. :)

rthalls....two things....

Make sure the flywheel is torqued down to specs and ....

Make sure the "good" battery is indeed good.

Your symptoms sounds more like a battery with low amps.

I think the Idle timing or lync and sync is off, causing the starter to kick out because the engine fires quickly and then dies off. In other words, it fires right away, but does not continue to run for some reason and the starter kicks out as it's supposed to. When you put your foot on the flywheel, you put some drag on the motor when it's cranking and it continues to crank with the load on it. Just a theory...

no the motor will not rope start for its unable to pull enough gas up , if I take the motor cover off and turn the choke to manual and pump the bulb tigh it will then start on the first comporession turn ..........
