Hello,

I have a boat with a evinrude-60HP-VRO motor of 1991,
and this summer it had a failure.
Once it was working fine during 3 - 5 minutes, there
were 3 or 4 partial motor failures. In this moment, if
we made the motor working in low speed, the motor is
still working. If we made the motor working in high
speed, finally the motor get stopped.
Once the motor has been stopped (break down), it is
difficult to start it again in spite of having the
pear full of fuel manually. Nevertheless, if we wait
some minutes after the failure, there is easier to
start again the motor.

The refrigeration seems to be OK (there is exit of
water), and furthermore, the temperature of the motor
seems to be normal, because when the failure appears,
there is possible to touch the cover of the thermostat
with the hand without burning.
A local boat mechanic has dismount and cleaned the
three carburetor (they were fine), and the VRO but he
had not found nothing wrong which could cause the
failure. In spite of this, he had disable the VRO,
disconnecting the electric system of VRO and the oil
inlet, and taking directly fuel mixed with 2%.
Doing it, the mechanic though that the problem will be
solved, but it the FAILURE IS STILL THE SAME
I realized that immediately after start the motor in
cool, the motor works correctly, and after 3-5
minutes, there is the failure. Could be possible that
the motor temperature has any influence? Maybe the
fuel pump has a failure because of wrong working of
impulse fuel system?
Anybody know what could be the cause?
The local boat mechanic insists that reason could be
of VRO system, and in his opinion it has to be
changed. Anybody know the price of this material and how to obtain it?

Thanks for your reply.

Kinda hard to determine what you're saying but, Since the VRO has been disabled and you are mixing the oil in the fuel tank, that eliminates the VRO as being the problem. It sounds as though you have a fuel problem. When it starts to die when trying to go to high speed, try pumping the Primer Bulb on the fuel line and see if it speeds up without dying! It is also possible that you do have an overheating problem. Do you ever hear any alarm going off, coming from the shift control, when this happens? Also, You have to put your hand on the "Head" to determine if it is hot. If you cannot hold your hand on the head, you have an overheating problem, which means you need to rebuild the Water Pump. Which is probably not a bad Idea if it has not been done in a while(2 Years). Try to give more information in a clear manner and I'm sure someone else will have some other ideas.

Sounds like fuel pump diaphragm may be worn out or possibly the quickstart is in question if so equipped.

That Motor does not have the quickstart feature, so it may very well be the VRO oil and fuel pump went south, although they say those pumps, at least the fuel side, are very reliable. I'm out of ideas, as I have yet to have this happen on my '91 70HP with the VRO(Same Thing as his, basically).

I concur Rickdb1boat when i disabled my vro on 95 rude 70 dealer said that fuel half of vro pump is better design than that of conventional.Perhaps problem could lie in the carb sinc .easy check to insure that linkage roller in nuetral is lined with center of fiber cam scribe line.also need to perform visual on carb flaps for sinc and determine whether one or more is out .

Re: 1991. Evinrude-60HP-VRO failure

I have had many problems with my 60 VRO. 5 teardowns. One problem I found on the 5 teardown that would be worth checking is the fuel solenoid and the fuel lines. The fuel solenoid system is "T" into the #2 carb and any leaks in that system will cause a problem with the #2 cylinder. On my last teardown I discovered the maintenance valve in the fuel solenoid was cracked allowing air to be sucked into the #2 carb fuel line. This is not an obvious observation because the crack can be real small and fuel leakeage from the solenoid when you push in your electric choke may not be that obvious. Check it out, because if it is cracked, it will cause a slow death to the #2 cylinder over and over and over
