Hi all, just got this motor and the alarm will go off continuously with the key on and engine on or off, cold or hot. Sometimes alarm will function as intended, but its ON way more than off. I checked temp sensor and it sounds alarm when grounding to block. I also disconnected each bullet connector under cover coming from vro tank and alarm went off each time, does that mean the problem is located in oil tank or could it be some other electrical gremlin? I also took bolts off of top of oil tank and pulled pickup assembly up towards top of tank and messed with it a bit and seemed to make alarm go off while I was fiddling with it, but dropped it back in and alarm on again. Can you check continuity of the two wires coming out of tank and if so, would continuity mean low oil, and NO continuity mean tank is full? I guess my question is, is there any way to test functionality of oil level sensor?

Perhaps the circuit on the buzzer itself is faulty.----It is supposed to sound momentarily when key is turned on and then shut off.

And it will do that every once in a while, but more often it is just on continuously. And when I unplug the oil tank sending wires the alarm goes off.

Sounds faulty oil level sensor to me.
Never worked on that one so post a pix if possible.
I suppose its gone and got itself permanent continuity somehow

cant get pic right now, so can you test the oil tank sending unit, or do I just have to buy a new one and hope that fixes it?

There are thousands of vro tanks just sitting in the garage collecting dust. Do a craigslist search in your area for free Johnson vro tank and see what comes up.

id try fixing it, i have never worked on one but i always try first by default, i doubt it would be too complicated.

How do I fix it or test it, nobody has mentioned any sort of testing procedure for testing the sensor, if there is one anyways. I guess that is what I am looking for, how to diagnose a bad tank sensor.

OMC had problems with those oil tanks back in those years with bad electronics in them. Get a 1996 oil tank or up and install that. All the new ones have are an on/off switch which tell you when the oil is low.

Carefully inspect the VRO pump for cracks... they tend to crack and fail with age.
Just saw another engine with VRO failure at the boat ramp today... His engine is scrap metal.

New VRO pump... something close to $450

Not sure which is the conversion pump to delete VRO for yours, but the ones for the 150 are $90 each and needs 2. (I think you use the same pump but just one)

Also a good time to be inspecting fuel lines. (just about any time is a good time to inspect fuel lines)

VRO failure = trash the engine...
Pre-mix means you never need to worry about the VRO.
