Hi iBoats!,

Have 1991 Evinrude 9.9hp, runs great. However, when removing electric starter, I noticed that the crankshaft has a lot of end-play. Moves visibly, with an audible 'clunk', when push/pulled. A dial indicator measured 0.017" (17 thousandths of an inch). Only a bit over spec, but it feels too loose so I am going to pull the lower crank bearing/seal holder ("crankcase head assembly"

I am guessing I find the lower bearing shot. Any one else familiar with these motors know what's likely to be culprit?

Anyone know how the crank endplay is set on these? I did not see any shims in the parts diagram; does OMC achieve desired endplay just by the dimensions of the standard parts?

Thanks for looking at this!

Did you check it while it was at operating temp or cold? You cannot set crank endplay on that motor. Either the bearing is bad or it isn't but no shims involved.

Best have a look at the bearing.-----Damaged bearing can wipeout the labarynth seal in the block.
