Hello all,

I have recently purchased my first Evinrude, a very tidy 9.9hp engine off ebay. I believe its a 1991 model (off the top my head BE10BAEIR is the serial). I have had a look at some of the other posts on the forum but still have a few questions about the engine. I would be very grateful if anyone could help me out.

1) I have had it fired up but I was wondering if someone could tell me the correct starting procedure (manual pull start).
2) There is a knob that is positioned on the front of the engine that looks as if it controls the airflow, but I am not sure, could anyone confirm its function.
3) Could anyone tell me the correct gearbox oil to use.
4) Where does the engine discharge the cooling water, I have had it going in a barrel and it doesn't appear to be overheating but I can't work out where the discharge is to tell whether its pumping or not.

As I said any help would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers,

Vaughane :)

Re: 1991 Evinrude 9.9hp Questions

you probably have a clogged pee hose. the outlet is on the rear starboard side of the lower cowl. this indicates the water pump is pumping. the rest of the water goes out with the exhaust. the lower unit uses 80-90 outboard lower unit oil. your fuel mixture is 50:1 TC-W3 outboard oil, both can be bought at Walmart Super Tech brand.

starting pump bulb, neutral, throttle turn all the way clock wise. choke pull rope, when it fires, push choke in. you may have to play with the choke till it warms up.

read the TOP SECRET FILE, 1st theard in this forum.

Re: 1991 Evinrude 9.9hp Questions

B= Belgium made
E= Evinrude
10= 9.9hp
BA = AC lighting + rope start
EI = 1991
R is a production code

1./ Open tank vent if manually vented
Pump bulb, to prime fuel system, until firm
Set shift to neutral
Ensure safety lanyard clipped to stop button (and you)
Pull choke knob fully
Set idle mixture knob to its mid position.
Set throttle to the start position, or open a little if you cannot see the marks.
Pull string!
When started return choke as it warms up and adjust throttle. Set throttle to shift position (or to minimum) before operating shift.

Quick action to engage gear, not gently!

2./ Two knobs. The choke pulls. The idle mixture tuns about 2/3 of a turn.

3./ Outboard gear oil. (Around 85W to 90 to API spec GL 5 but contains additional corrosion inhibitors they tell us) Fill from the bottom BTW and use new seals on the drain and level screws. Don't undo the Philips headed screw near the drain plug or bits inside will fall apart!

4./ Most goes out with the exhaust but there is a telltale on the rear starboard corner of the lower cover connected to a nipple on the exhaust manifold cover. That may just be blocked.

Several things to read on the ENGINE FAQs BOARD Especially " Awakening a sleeping outboard "
and the item on 9.9 & 15hp engines will tell you practically everything you'll ever need to know.

darn I always forget TD's top secret file!

I notice you call the gearcase "gearbox". You in the Uk by any chance. Last time I called it gearbox on a US forum I had to explain what I meant!

Re: 1991 Evinrude 9.9hp Questions

Hi all,

thanks for the help, your posts were very useful. I've had the outboard running and it goes very nicely. The only trouble i've had is in modifying it slightly to take a cable for the throttle on my tiller arm as it appears to have been opperaterated by a rod when its previous owner was using it remotely.

Anyways like I said thanks a lot!!

ps yes i am in the uk :)
