I just recently bought a boat with a 1991 johnson 90 v4 model number AJ90TLEIE. It has a high idle around 2500 rpm. The previous owner said it only started idling high after the VRO was removed and replaced with a fuel pump.
Carbs are synced and cam is not touching the roller. Idle screw returns to it's position. Just wondering if anyone has any other suggestions on what to look for. Thanks heaps

Thanks for the response mate, flywheel key seems to be ok. It's sort of odd to me that it was only after the VRO was deleted that this occurred. Do you think maybe a vacuum leak or leak in fuel line?

Part # of the replacement fuel pump?----Was it mounted directly over the pulse port on the intake manifold ?

Unsure of part number, it was replaced just before I bought it by a marine mechanic. It's not mounted directly on the port, just has a hose from the pulse valve to the pump.

There is a spot on the intake manifold just in front of the starter for a conventional pump.-----The pump mounts there with 2 screws and a gasket.-----Just needs a hoses for fuel in and fuel out.---Remove pulse limiter and plug that pressure port.------But other folks work to different standards I guess.----I do not believe there is a leak in a vacuum line or fuel line here.

How did you confirm that flywheel key is OK ???-----Is the flywheel nut torqued to 102.5 FT-LBS at this moment ?----I always encourage owners of these motors to do a compression test for future reference.------Post your numbers.

I'm going to upload a photo, I think the flywheel key might be the problem

Oh yes lol I should of listened to you initially. At the time I had just gotten off the phone to a marine mechanic and was told likely not it. Is there any trick to getting it off and installing a new one?

racer... are you sure there is a port for the pulse line to directly mount a conventional fuel pump on these? i have used a bracket to mount it, but still needed to hook up the pulse line. on the 2 cyl loopers, i use a brass 5/16-24 plug and use the ports, but cant 3cyl 56ci and up!

Yes 110 % sure there is a port just ahead of the starter motor.----Remove plug ( item #9 ) that is in the pressure port.----Mount the pump with 2 screws ( 10-24 ) and a gasket.----Or come over I show you how easy it is.
