I have a '91 40 horse Johnson two stroke short shaft, oil injected twin cyl. Just got it. Electric start, trim and tilt. LOVE IT. Question, is there an option for a "KILL SWITCH" other than pulling the dead-man teather switch or choking this thing each time I want to shut it down? Or, can someone advise on what to connect a "momentary" push button switch to, to serve as a kill switch? THANKS TO THIS FORUM for all your help thus far. I can't beleive the help I have gotten.

Re: 1991 Johson 40 Hp, Kill Switch???

It is possible to 'add' an additional or alternate kill switch. The two wires going to the existing 'dead man tether switch' is the answer. If you trace these two wires back to the motor, you should find one goes to powerhead 'ground' , the other to a wire comming from the powerpack. The tether switch is a Normally Open switch. In the normal 'run position', the two wires are not connected, hence the name , 'normally open'. When the lanyard is pulled, the switch closes and shorts the two wires together. This dead short, in effect, grounds the powerpack, and kills the motor.

You can add an additional 'kill button', (normally open type switch). Connect one wire from it to a powerhead bolt, that's the ground connection. Connect the other wire to the powerpack 'kill wire' (Black/yellow??).

Either pulling the lanyard OR pushing the new kill button should shut her down.

if this is the tiller version push in on the end of the stop lanyard switch. its a combination switch. push to kill or pull the lanyard to kill. there were two versions of that tiller I think. one had a combination button and one had a button on the end of the tiller and the emergency stop about half way down.
