What's cookin' Captain?
Ya haven't been around for a while.
Obviously a fuel delivery problem. If it's been three since the engine ran, I'd do a carb rebuild and clean all the orfices real good. Also check pulse lines to the fuel pump and fuel pump strainer and diaphragm. If that don' do it, get back and let us know. Oh, and replace the thermostat. It won't run for caca without it. Runs to cold.

c/6

Hooty

hey hooty,
would you believe I have been so busy that I have not had time for any tupe of boating enjoyment. getting back now though.

high jets are cleaned but did not remove the ones with the factory plastic cover. I guess that would be the low jets. will have to redo and re soak. i forgot about that fuel pump.

another question. the water coming out of the tattle tale is steaming hot. i did not run long. do you konw the cause? i cant hold hand under the water for longer than a sec or 2. yes just changed water pump. i heard that its normal for mercs. but is it that hot? the head feels hot as well. sorry, i dont have a gauge or alarm on this rig. temp gauge and alarm being set up. test ran few mins. had to stop.

thanks.

any suggest?

I don' know enough about Merc cooling stuff to be much help. I would guess the waterpump is working 'cause you've got water at the tattletale. How about t'stats? Are they opening all the way? Oops, no t'stats.

c/6

Hooty

I have a 1998 200HP Merc and the water temp from the tattle tale is hot and it's been like that from the day I bought it. I was also told by merc people and local mechanics that this is normal for that year motor...

...forgot to mention that the water temp coming from the tattle tale on my merc is about 140 degrees.

Lets Bar-b-q,

Go to NAPA, spend about $80 and get a non-contact thermometer. You point it, pull the trigger and it gives a digital readout of the temperature of the spot where the little red dot is. With it, you can tell if the engine is over-heated or not. You can even tell which cylinders are firing and which ones aren't. Cool toy, neat tool, good investment.

Hey BBQ,

Glad you're back.

Put those T-stats back in. They're there for a reason. Without them, you can have hot and cold spots in the engine-not good. That may be PART of your running problem.

Check the incoming fuel lines and fittings for air leaks. I had a merc 90hp that would run good and then run out of fuel. I had to pump the bulb to keep going. Leak was found in the oring seal in the fitting at the motor end of the fuel line. I hope this helps, Good luck, dgs.

hey djohn19, good to be back. its been awhile. back with some new projects. yeah, i will reinstall new themostats. real foolish.

hooty, that sounds like a neat toy. i'm gonna check into that. And how do you check to see if a cylinder is firing just by this gauge? by the high temp I assume?

so how hot is too hot for the motor?

Re: 1991 xr4 150 blackmax - will die but hitting choke will revive

fixed it.

turn out did not have fire on the port side. lucky have extra pack. changed it and it fired and idle good. sounded alot smoother and started up like a champ. put the thermostats back in and hooked up alarm and temp gauge. the water in the tattle tail was still steaming when it hit the grass but the temp gauge showed it was little under middle. the heads felt hot to the touch. I guess it is normal for this motor to be hot. thanks for all the help.
