I have a 1992 15 hp Force outboard that has a very weak spark. So weak that it will not cause a spark on a spark plug at any gap setting. I have bought new coils installed them checked the wiring and grounds to make sure everything is connected correctly. Using a standard spark tester (with the bulb in it) i still do not get it to light up nor do i get a spark on the plug, however when i use a small volt tester it does light up the little red light on it. So it seems to be putting out a ver small amount of current. I am wondering if the flywheel magnet might be weak or am i just missing something obvious. Its a simple system with two coils under the flywheel (no points or condensers) with a ground wired to the block. I am open to suggestions. Thanks

Make sure that the ignition Kill circuit is not engaged thus preventing any spark.

Hi, thanks for your reply. I have checked that as well even disconnected them and connected the wires directly to a ground to make sure the circuit is complete and still the same result. Its a nice looking motor but its driving me crazy, i have fixed more complicated systems and im just going nuts with it. its got me inventing new curse words.....thanks again

If you are grounding the Kill circuit, that will prevent any spark. Try disabling it buy leaving them disconnected and not connected to anything and see if spark returns.

If spark returns and you test by successfully starting the motor, to stop the motor, just put your hand over the carburetor to cut off the air.

Thanks for the quick reply & advice...I finally got it to spark. It turns out I had to adjust the distance between the flywheel magnet and the coil. Initially the coil was too far back from the magnet once I got it to the sweet spot I got a nice blue spark.

That was going to be my next question if you still had no spark. I was wondering if the gap between the coils and magnet could be adjusted. Good job in getting it going!
