It's not 10° out for once so I took the outdrive off. It didn't make it without some problems too. I found 2 hairline cracks. Maybe I can get them fixed, maybe it would be ok left alone. After a few more river log hits it may break out too. I hate to replace it all, too expensive for me.

You can probably fix anything that is just a crack from sideload. As long as that is all it is. From looking closely at your pictures, I would be worried that your transom itself is damaged. Someone already sillyconed all the way around the gimbal housing, which is a dead giveaway that your transom has enough rot that the transom seal is leaking. Before you spend a bunch on this, do some test holes on the inside bottom part of the transom and see if your wood is rotting out.

Well when I first bought the boat 11yrs ago, the first year or 2 of docking it I hit a log not very big and just coming of a plane. When I docked the boat I noticed it was leaking and bilge pump was coming on. Long story short it put a crack in the hull from the transom being rotten. So I took the boat apart replaced the floor and dug all the wood out of the transom. http://www.transomrepair.net/product_info.php?products_id=34

I tried this epoxy. When it was all said and done I noticed the transom was slightly concave looking. When I bolted up the gimbal housing I was concerned it wouldn't seal so I put the silicone around it. When everything tighten up it pulled the transom flat. Anyway it hasn't leaked a drop in 9 yrs and that epoxy is pretty darn strong.

So back to the crack on the outdrive... how would you address that?

It's rolling the dice but I would vote have the cracks welded, and only on one side should be sufficient

That's a good reason to have silicon around the housing. Thanks for the explanation.

Not hard to weld those cracks up as long as they aren't close to a seal. Where your indicated crack is you could easily drain the case and pull the shift shaft and seal all the way out, and the nipple for the speedo.. Nothing else back there at all. A little grind and a MIG or TIG weld.

Well guys I thank you for all your help thus far! I will search around for someone that can weld aluminum. I have a mig and arc but not for aluminum. I'll keep an eye out for a gimbal housing too.

Is there a difference between a V8 and 4cyl gimbal housing and outdrive?

I assume a Bravo Gimbal Housing is not the same as a Gen2?

Thanks
Chris

The housing matches the drive type Alpha 1, Gen 2, Bravo and no concern with motor size

Ok guys need your help again. I found a reasonable priced gimbal housing alpha one gen 2. Here is the problem mine does not use the lower unit oil reservoir container inside the boat but this one does. What are my options?
