I think the real question is why doesn't the pump run when it is powered directly. There is only one answer. Bad pump. Why it is bad, I don't know.

I am afraid of that, that would be the second new one to do this in a little over a month, any idea what could cause this, could it be an electrical short?

How clean is your antisiphon valve, and fuel tank filter?

Could be excessively high voltage (not likely) or restriction on the suction side. make sure the filter on the pickup tube is clear and check the antisiphon valve. I would actually replace the AS valve. If it gets stuck in the open position(caused by debris or gelled MTBE in the fuel system) it will create a cold starting problem for you later. Also, shop around for the pump, I replaced one last year for $134 shipped.

today replaced anti-syphon valve and the fuel pump, now the pump works - I can hear it humming again, still wont start, pulled the coil wire from the distributor and put it next to a ground and had good spark, pulled two different plug wires and did the same - good spark there too, I pump the throttle cable and see gas in the two closest chambers (venturies?) where the choke plate is, but dont notice gas in the back two

What should I do, burning the boat is getting closer and closer

You may have it flooded. Move the throttle to WOT possition and crank till it starts (Don't let it over-rev) but allow it to clear out.

My wife has been saying its the oil pressure switch, and I keep saying no way, when I try to start the engine the oil pressure gauge moves up to around 40, please tell me it cant be the switch is the problem, or I will owe her BIG time, hahahahaha

When starting, the oil pressure switch does nothing. The power to the fuel pump comes from the starter. Even if it was bad, they normally run for 15 or 20 seconds and die. Then when you crank them again the pump fill the bowl up while cranking then it runs for another 15 or 20 seconds and dies.

ok, tried to start WTO still will not start. ..Continues to turn over, will not start...just about at wits end...any other ideas before we torch this thing,

after I tried this I pushed throttle forward to make sure it is getting fuel, pumps fuel into carb just fine..

I think you better go back and check the spark, this time make sure it's bright blue and will jump at least a 1/2" gap.
Also be sure the battery is up enough to get proper cranking rpm. If the engine is only cranking over real slow, then it won't start.

thanks Don, checked the spark, didn't get spark at plugs....replaced spark plugs and with much hope, turned her over...engine tried to turn over, then heard a pop then nothing...now will not even turn over. Tried the red curcuit breaker button, it will not push in...(but also doesn't seem it popped out any further than it was)
