i have a 1992 evinrude 40 hp.recently i have noticed a black goey substance dripping from the L/U. it seems to be coming from the area around the propshaft. it started the last time i went to the lake. all went well ubtil i parked the boat in the garage an noticed the oil on the floor. it wasnt much so i shrugged it off. yesterday i put the water muffs on the motor and ran it 2 ensure the motor was running properly after installing new spark plugs. today i noticed an approximatley 4 in diameter puddle of oil on the garage floor. any suggestions as 2 what i should do?

It probably is. It happens more after running on muffs in the driveway.

If its black and gunky looking, its coming from the exhaust. Lower unit lub would not be that dark. If it has some water in it it would have a milky or slightly beige color. Make sure the thermostat is working on that engine. It may be running too cool.

It's intermittent for me too. Sometimes it does it, sometimes it doesn't.

this is kind of off subject, but how many rpm's should i be turning at wot. the motor is on a tournament tx 17 bass tracker. im running a 11 3/4 by 17 prop at around 4900-5000 rpm. is this within the suitable range? thank you guys again

I would worry about that a lot more than the puddle. It's way too low. Need at least 5500. We shoot for 5800. Go to the new prop forum, read the post for first time posters and then add a post. I along with others (hopefully Kenny & Dhadley) will help you out.
