This outboard starts good and runs when it wants too. The problem is when it is running good it all of a sudden it will cut back to 1/3 open speed
and will not pick back up to normal speed. The next two or three times out it will run good. Then
the next time the same thing again only 1/3 open.
I have had 1 year of Johnson trouble!! I have replaced the following, fuel tank, lines from tank to motor, squeeze bulb, fuel pump and all lines, power pak, coil, and pluges and wires. Need all the help you can give. Thanks!

Ahoy, JHB.

You have proven my theory that 5 parts are replaced that don't need replacing for every part that needs to be replaced.

You are dropping a cylinder intermittently, or S.L.O.W. is reducing power to save your engine from detonating.

It may be heat related. Try removing the cover when this happens to allow your ignition system to run cooler, and to prevent any electrical leakage through pinched wire. If these do not produce any results, run the engine at a quick idle and heat the ignition system with a hair dryer, with particular attention to the stator assembly (watch out for that flywheel!!). If rpm drop you have found a "hot failure".

Use a manual to review and examine all conditions that can activate S.L.O.W.

Stop replacing parts (are there any left?) until you have found the faulty part.

Let us know what you find. Good luck. :)

Hi JHB,

I didn't see where you checked the carbs. You could have something in one of the float bowls getting stuck in the high speed orifice.

When the motor slows down, push the key in just for a moment and release it to activate the primer circuit. If the engine picks up the dead cylinder, it's fuel related and you'll need to find which cylinder it is.

If it isn't that it could be a bare spot in a wire touching ground on occasion or even an internally broken wire. If you can safely do it while the problem is occuring, move some wires around with some insulated pliers to see if you can pick up the bad cylinder. Then inspect that area of the wiring.

Good luck.....
