guys, i am having an issue with getting my motor started. I took it in to get my carbs cleaned last week. Before i took it in it started fine with no problems. I got it back from the mechanic the other day and now it will not fire at all. took it back to the mechanic and he said that somewhere we have lost spark and that all three cylinders are losing spark. he said it is either the power pack or stator. i have received excellent info from Tashasdaddy on some diagnotsic things to check. How common is it for a stator to fail as well as the power pack. It just puzzles me that it started fine a week ago and now nothing. just wondering if anyone else has had this type of issue and what worked for you. are there any little things to look for before asssuming it is the power pack or stator?

the kill switch lanyard is hooked up. i recently had it serviced for carb work so i am going to go back through and check all connectiions and make sure everything is tight. mechanic said it is power pack or stator. how do i check to see if the power pack is failing?

You can wack the power pack a couple of times with a rubber mallet to see if it will fire. Sometimes when they are starting to go and you get intermittent spark/no spark, if you whack and the motor fires up that will tell the powerpack.

what you can try is,disconnect the black/white wire from the powerpack that is the kill, circut, you will need to press the choke to kill ,besure to have water to eng it it starts,if that dont work, disconnect red harness, then do a spark check by jumping positive strait to the starter,if you dont want to do the spark test ,and decide to just jump to start,BE SURE YOU HAVE WATER TO THE ENG FOR COOLING YOU WILL HAVE NO WAY TO SHUT DOWN EXCEPT DISCONNECTING FUEL <OR TURNING THE RED PRIMER HANDLE <HOPEFULLY TO CHOKE,it will start without the harness, and testing for spark is alot safer,I like danger.if it starts, you likely have a bad ignition switch,or safety lanyard ,or any other type kill someone may have installed. If you dont get spark,I would bet on the powerpack, you can search testing powerpacks, but you will need tech meter.

I had exactly the same problem. Plugs were sparking but it just would not fire up. Checked the kill switch and everything else I could think of but no go. It turned out it was the stator. I installed a 2nd hand replacement yesterday and it started no problem at all.
My moter had been off my boat for almost two years so the lengthy time sitting unused may have had a lot to do with the stator failing.
