1992 60hp Mercury top end rattle/heavy clicking??

my bud has a 1992 60hp Mercury with an upper engine rattle. sounds to me like a possible wrist pin or maybe a cracked piston. we didn't notice the noise until after the water impeller was changed, but we didn't run it much before that either. (recent purchase). once you get the motor wound up to 1000RPM's and more, the noise goes away. could this thing be lacking oil at low R's? it's oil injection. the impeller was shot, and it would be easy to believe the last owner ran it hot. it HAS great compression, and idles great at about 300 RPM. definitely not a scored cylinder or piston....

well, with winter upon us, we tore the engine down. the top cylinder and piston are scored something terrible. got the block to the machine shop, and preparing to order the parts. what kind of sealer do you guy's use when resealing the block and crankcase?

I use Permatex anaerobic flange sealer:
