Hello,

I replaced the impeller with what looks like an identical slightly used impeller. The round pin didn't stay put. I did back flush the water passages with compressed air and water. I don't see how that would have dislodged the pin. What would cause this? Thanks.

Your best bet is to buy the right NEW impeller and reinstall it. The roll pin, when properly installed will not dislodge and allow the impeller to turn on the driveshaft.

Good suggestion. Why would one want to install a used $10 impeller?

Just a little info.I was the little motor guy for a few years in a shop down in Fl. Keys.I cant tell you how many of those 9.9-15 hp impellers would become detached from the metal bushing.what would be like nails on a blackboard to me was when the sailboaters would tell me they dont use their engines much,so they didnt think it was imporant to do it every year.between them andthe guys that RELIED on these engines as kickers not maintaining the very piece of equiptment that they needed when the poop hit the fan made me nuts. The botls freeze, grommets swell shut ,carbs plug up, and impellers seperate. Not looking to insult anyone. I just did mucho work on these great lil engines because they wern't maintained

One new impeller I bought had a triangular plastic "pin.

Maybe the slightly used one you fitted was one like that.

The advice to buy a brand new one is sensible and be sure you use the correct pin.

a new one is less than 20 dollars. I can't imagine messing with used at that price

Vic,

The pin is the original cylinder shaped one. I may have to get a new one, but I'm sure there are a lot worse impellers still putting out water than this used one. My 35hp has been pumping water for 3 years now. This same 8hp had a new one put in and it broke in no time. $15 here and $15 there really adds up. Pretty soon you have more in it than it's worth. I appreciate your help so far.

Come on........get the RIGHT impeller, and I bet the pin will stay put. If you are putting a differemt impeller, possibly made for a different key, in there, it might have too much wiggle room. Or the shaft hole is waddled out, which means a new pin will do jack S.

All two stroke 9.9/15's use the same impeller and impeller pin.....since the engine came about in 74'. Unless the pin is REALLY wore or the impeller groove is warbled out, there should be no reason for the pin to come out....unless during reassembly the pin fell out.

And I agree with the others.....why use a USED impeller?

OBJ and JB.... I've been trying to contact the pair of you via email for a couple weeks, apparently to no avail. It would seem that either you have me blocked or something is wrong on my end. I'd appreciate hearing form you via normal email. Please delete this off topic post after reading it. Thanks. (Joe)

Guess you guys were right. A new impeller seems to have solved the problem. I cleaned out salt in the back of the motor than kept cycling salt desolver trhough it and it is working much better.

There is a lot of oil coming out the prop so I guess seals are the next step. Always something. Thanks.
