I have a 1992 90 hrs V4 Johnson and I am trying to remove the steering arm. I cant get the bottom mount for the lower unit off. It looks like it is splined on the inside but after removing the nut at the bottom there is also threads. Help please.
You don't need to take the bottom mount off, you just need to remove the bolts coming in from the front. Basically you remove the powerhead and lower unit. Then remove the midsection. At that point, once the nut is off the bottom of the steering arm it will come up out of the swivel housing.
Thanks for the info but where are the bolts and how many? I thought I had all the bolts out. Top of swivel near arm or bottom closer to the lower unit mount?
You have to remove the top two bolts coming in from the front of the upper motor mount. Then the bolts coming into the lower mounts from the front. Then the midsection can be removed (as long as the powerhead is off and the lower unit is off). With the midsection off you can remove the nut on the bottom of the steering shaft. Then the steering arm & tube will come up & out.
