I'm looking at a 1992 evinrude 100 xp for a friend. It's giving an alarm at higher rpm's,when throttled down the alarm goes away.I'm figuring it's an overheat alarm so the first place I'll look is the impeller.I haven't heard it run yet but I'll hit it with the infrared just too see if that's it.I did see the vro in unhooked,he has been mixing the fuel for a couple year's.What I'd like to ask is there a manual I can download somewhere on here? I'd like to check it out thourghly as he takes out on lake superior a lot.

The only service manual for that engine is the factory one. You can get one from outboardbooks.com, or call Ken Cook Co., in Milwaukee. There generally 3 alarms for that engine. A constant horn is an overheat. If you have no alarm (horn) at idle-but do at high rpm's, I'd want to check the pressure relief valves in the thermostat housing. Those nylon valve open when the boat is planing, causing significant extra cooling water to flow through the block. If these valves don't work (might be heat-distorted and won't open properly) then it could overheat at high rpm's. At idle rpm's all the cooling flows through the thermostats.

Check it with the infared gun first to see if it's actually over heating and not a horn prob.

Thank's for the info, I pretty much forgot about the poppit, been awhile since I've worked on one of these. Hopefully I'll be checking it out before the end of the week. grub
