Vic gives good info. You might also do a search here for "water cooled regulators" . The cooling system has to be well maintained -- personally would not run on muffs, but others might see that differently. Look for signs of overheating on your rectifier/regulator. It's an expensive little puppy to replace, so worth finding all the info. you can. Believe the R/R will be the problem for charging and tach operation (think you should see 14.2 amps at about 2000 rpm if the system is working, but check threads for info.)

thanks im going to do all the checks next week but the tach has been acting up for a couple years and when i took it out the other day i did have a weak battery but got it started ran it around for about 30 minutes and when i got it back to the dock and cut it off the battery was almost dead and its a fairly new battery. I have since recharged the battery and did a voltage check coming out of the rectifier casing going to tach and im getting the 11 volts but have not done the checks for the rectifier or stator yet but hope to get to that next week. Im hoping its just the tach and a weak battery. there are no signs of overheating on the rectifier or any of the wires under the plastic housing but ill see if it stays charged up this time it ran very strong with no hesitation so hopefully its a minor issue thanks for the reply
