1992 Four Winns 454 King Cobra Rev Problems

Guys I have a 1992 Four Winns 220 Horizon. The engine is a 454 carbureted model. This boat has been awesome for me for the 10 years that I have owned it. We kept it in storage for one season and ran into some problems when we got it out last year. So last summer it developed an issue where it would not go over 25mph on the initial run. The boat would miss when you tried to peg the throttle down above 25mph. But after you shut the boat off and let it cool down it the issue subsides and the boat runs like it should. You can go on a 15 mile run and not have any issues. So my mechanic rebuilt the carb replaced the fuel filter and we still are having this issue. I keep my boat out of state so it is hard for me to get my hands on it without a 4 hour trip. My mechanic is stumped and frustrated on what it could be. It is getting harder and harder to find people that are willing to work on Omc configured boats around here.

It seems like I have some kind of an electrical issue going on. It acts like I am hitting a rev limiter. That's the only way I can describe it. ​

Does anyone have an idea on what could be causing this? Thanks

Does it have electronic igniton and could the module be breaking down when it gets hot?

It has the spitfire ignition. It only does it when the boat is cold,

OK then is the choke working and opening as it should? Which carb, the Rochester Quadrajet or Holley 4bbl? Rochester has an exhaust heated crossover that opens the choke, Holley has an electric choke

When was last tuneup, cap rotor plugs, maybe wires, etc.

I looked it up on Crowley marine's parts site. It looks like a Holley 4175 spread bore carb. Make sure the choke is working correctly, it is an electric choke so if there are wiring issues or the heater element died it will not open as it should.
BTW even if the parts are not available from OMC/BRP you can get them directly from Holley because that carb is still in production and you can get a brand new one, you just have to make sure of what you have. Take pix and post em up.

im leaning to vapor lock or the ignition module.

dirty carbs do not clear themselves.

I will take a pic of the carb when I go back down. I just had the carb rebuilt. It runs awesome with the rebuild. I have been running ethanol free gas. Thanks

I always suggest people look at #1 to best post your "problem"...........But have a look at #14. There's a LOT of reasons for not making rated RPM at WOT.

Also, if you have an ignition problem, plan on buying yourself a replacement (Marine) distributor, don't waste any money on your Spitfire ignition. Most of the parts are NLA....
