Does it have Spitfire ignition as Bob said.If it has a 4 bbl. it does.The breather,carb.cover will say Spitfire on it.Another thing that will tell you if it is a Cobra Spitfire is all the plug wires will plug onto a big black rectangular coil on a plate at the back of engine.The reason I ask all of these things about this ignition is I have one.I experienced the same problems with mine,it was a Spitfire.I fought with it for 3 years doing what you are saying.I do not want to lead you the wrong way if it is not but if it is I can give you some ideas.

I'm almost positive it's a 4 bbl carb. I don't recall ever seeing Spitfire anywhere though. I am going to take a look at the engine again today, and take a few pictures. We just talked to a local marine mechanic and described the problem - he thinks it may be the carb. Look for my updated reply by tonight.

Okay, so I was wrong. I was 98% sure too. lol. It is a 2 bbl carb.

Here are a few pictures..

We are taking it to a local marine mechanic - he's gonna charge us $75 to take a look. I still would appreciate more opinions..
