1992 Johnson 120 stuck in forward gear

I lost my neutral and reverse somehow yesterday and I'm not sure why. I am now always in forward gear but I have no problem starting the engine. I am thinking that the throttle control is sticking but I am hoping for some advice before I just start taking things apart. Any advice is appreciated.

Re: 1992 Johnson 120 stuck in forward gear

I've read as many posts as I could regarding this issue and I still don't know where to start. If anybody can give any thoughts on what order I should check things I would really appreciate it.

Here's as much info as I have:

- boat was running perfectly all day then while trying to back off of dock to put boat on trailer it lost neutral and reverse and only had forward, made things difficult to say the least lol.
- it starts still and runs fine in forward
- linkage seems to be moving appropriately however I'm not exactly sure what to look for
- boat still idles at appropriate rpm but is in forward gear of course

Thanks

Doug

Hopefully this will eventually get across the right set of eyes.

More info and another question...

- with throttle in reverse I can manually put into neutral by moving the linkage, I don't know if this means bad cable or controls but I know it's due for a cable so I'll do that for sure.
- the throttle linkage moves smoothly but the shift linkage doesn't move at all.

Question - Which cable for a 17" Javelin 363 to a 1992 Johnson 120?

And do I have to remove the throttle control completely off to test it's functionality?

disconnect the shift cable from the motor.... try to use the control box and see if the cable moves freely....

if yes then try to switch gears.. sometimes is hard to move it by hand but it can be done.. if not use some pliers... if it moves then i have no idea.... hhaha

i have the feeling its your cable....good luck

Thanks.

Yes I can switch it into neutral by hand if I move the linkage, I think this is only possible when I had the throttle in the reverse position.

I'm hoping it's just the cable, I just don't know which cable to purchase.

for johnson there are two kinds; the post 1979 and the pre 1979.. you obviously need the pre 1979 ... but they come in diffrent sizes and for diffrent controls... if the cable is the problem you will have to disconnected from the controls and motor, pull it out and measure it.... then see which one you need here :)

Wait, you mean I need the post 1979 right? My boat is a '92 so I guess just measure and get the post 79 cable?

Thanks again.

I'll know more tonight after work when I have a chance to do a few tests, right now I'm just hoping it's the cable.
