1992 Johnson 25hp shift problem

Well I just pulled the lower unit off to replace impeller, and when I got it all put back together...well when I shift from reverse to neutral its fine, but whe I put it in forward and then try to put it in neutral, it stays in forward.

Is there a way to adjust the shift linkage?

The shift rods connect on this model of motor are the barrel type nut connectors.

Basically just wanting to know possibly what might be causing this or if you can adjust the shift linkage somehow.

Did you get the connectors underneath the water pickup screens connected correctly along with the little split ring on the shift rod installed ? Was the lower shift rod bottomed in the yoke upon final assembly ?

By the split ring, do you mean the little plastic keeper under the nut?

And the rod bottomed, do you mean screwed down all the way?

I have checked all that, and for the nut all you do is screw them together...there is no way to do it otherwise is their?

I will recheck everything...the little plastic keepers under the nut are cone shaped...just to make sure the bigger ends face each other on opposite rods correct?

I believe the problem is with a misadjustment of the shift shaft connector. I did the same thing and although mine still works fine, it isn't right as far as the location of neutral. I'm going to probably readjust mine tonight and try to report back the number of threads above and below that should be showing when I get it perfect.

So when connecting the two nuts, it's ok if there are threads showing? Cause I can get it to work like that.

Joho5.............I'm in the process of trying to change the water pump in my 92' 25hp and can't seem to figure out the TRICK in separating the Lower Gear Unit from the motor............must have something to do with the PLASTIC KEEPER and nut. It just hangs off the bottom............ANY ADVICE on how to remove the keeper? Txs.
