1992 Johnson 60hp, VRO disconnected (mix the fuel) Went to the lake today, motor would not start. Ran great the last 3 days. Getting fuel but had no spark on all 3 cylinders. Switched batteries (new deep cycle for trolling, so good battery) just to be certain that was not the issue. Still no spark, fuel mix draining out of exhaust. Tested kill switch, works properly. Brought it home, put batteries back in regular locations, made sure it was all good and tight. Boat started, but was running rough, pulled plug wires to see if it had spark, #1 top cylinder good (engine tried to die, but could see really strong spark), #2 middle good (ran rough, could see really strong spark), #3 bottom no spark (no change to engine running, no visible spark)

Switched coil #3 with coil #2, problem followed coil. So now I was thinking power pack, but but not sure that a power pack would or could cause intermittent spark. So switched spark plugs and problem went away, but still runs a little rough. The rpm will drop everyonce in awhile but not all the time. When you give it gas and run it up to 1K-1500K RPM, it goes away. Did not try to go in higher, running on water muffs.

Can I check the power packs? Resistance, etc. . . to see if one is bad, but still good enough to cause a spark? Can I check the Power Pack, would it cause one coil to fire intermittently? I am curious to why it would not fire at all and then all sudden ( with me messing with the batteries) it started. Any ideas?? I was doing some searching on here, and came across an issue with an of rough running, due to VRO pump diaphram wearing out. But since the pump just feeds the carbs and the carbs feed each cylinder, does not sound feasible. Carbs were just rebuilt back in February.

Any ideas would greatly be apppreciated.

Thanks,
Tex

Re: 1992 Johnson 60HP, spark issue

lets rethink this. 1st the battery only supplies power to the starter to turn the motor, does not provide ignition spark, that is created by the stator. so batteries are out of picture. you swapped coil #3 with #2, and the problem followed the coil, make coil #3 suspect. changing the plugs may have cleaned up a dirty connection.

i would run it again a see if the suspect coil fails again. take a spark tester of induction timing light with you.

also just because the carbs were cleaned does not mean they have not been contaminated since them. i would consider replacing 17 years old fuel lines tank to carbs, with alcohol resistant fuel lines (Ethanol).

Thanks, I will check that coil again and do a compression check just to confirm no issues. I also suspect the power pack, might have caused the initial no start. Will check that as well. As far as fuel lines are concerned, will any automotive type fule been acceptable?

fuel line is fuel line, just be sure it is alcohol resistant.
