My Mercruiser 3.0 quit so I bought a 1992 Kencraft equipped with a 1992 Mariner 115 HP engine, also has a 9.9 merc on the back.Several people have told me I will need the 9.9 because the Mariners have a lot of problems. The whole rig has been garage kept and looks like new and well maintained.Does anyone know what the major problems are & the good points of this type of engine.

Re: 1992 Mariner 115 outboard

The big beef on the 115 is that it runs on 2 cylinders at low speed and all 4 at higher speed. There's a spot on the throttle (1800-2400rpm) where it has a hard time deciding on how many cylinders it should be running on. It's not a flaw, it's a characteristic. Maintaining a constant speed is impossible. This mostly effects wakeboarders, tubers, and beginning waterskiers. Other than that characteristic, they seem to be decent motors. If you don't have to run between 1800 and 1400rpm, you'll love it.
