1992 Mariner Magnum 40--Oil inection removed, not sure done right

I picked up a 1992 Mariner Magnum 40 that I am trying to bring back to life. The oil inection tank and system was removed when I bought the engine and I do not have the parts to put it back on. The gear pump is still in place.

My questions:

The fuel line comes in through the front of the pan and goes into a tee. The branch goes to the top carburetor and the straight part of the tee goes back to the oil pump. There is a smaller fitting on the pump that currently does not have an hose going to it. I know that the pump has to keep oil going to it so it will not lock up.

How do I loop the hoses so I can keep oil flowing? Keep the hose coming off the tee and cap the small hose fitting? I will try to post pictures in a little while to assist.

Loop a hose between the oil pickup and outlet ports on the pump, making sure there's some oil in the line for pump lubrication. Then eliminate the oil injection check valve/tee assembly in the fuel line by installing a double hose barb splice connector.​

It sounds like all you need is an oil tank and a hose to the pump. It baffles me as to why people disable the oil injection on that series of engines - I have never seen the oil pump fail on one of those. The varibable ratio pumps used on engines like the Black Max were problematic, mainly due to people propping them to turn well over 5,500 rpm. But the injection on the 40 Mariner/Mercury is virtually foolproof as long as you keep oil in the tank.

It sounds like I have a problem then....The motor came with no tank, it has been removed. That being said I have no idea what kind of condition the oil pump is in if someone ran it without the tank.

Chris: The reason I disconnected mine was for various reasons. I have a 2001 150 Merc and have had it now for two seasons. I think one problem with my boating is that I don't go enough. Anyway my alarm started going off last season. First problem was that I could only hear it with the engine idleing. More reasons: I read about the magnets commonly falling off causing the sensor to sound. Hoses breaking. Modules going out and expensive not to mention a mechanics charge. I mixed for twenty plus years and am comfortable about not forgetting to add the oil. I've learned a lot from you about the problems with mixing with this new gas and best to use pure synthetic when mixing with alcohol gas and I thank you. At this point I'm still finding no alcohol gas and mixing conventional oil. Now I have confidence knowing the oil is there and about all I worry about now is not clogging up the carbs and fouling the plugs. Glad they make Sea Foam! I did save all the parts, tank etc. if the next owner decides to hook it back up or if I decide to hook it up again for that matter. You guys that answer all these questions are appreciated!
