1992 merc 40 hp

hey guys, im thinking about buying a 1992 40 hp mercury outboard. apparantly it was peviously used by the military as a spare, it hasnt seen much use at all. this is an in-line 4 engine, i was checking it out today, does anybody know if this is a good engine or not, he is selling it for 2 grand canadian, is it worth it? and if i do buy it, will i have to do anything for it, because it hasnt been used much at all<br /><br />any help would be great..... thanks guys!

Nothing wrong with that model engine. If it sat for a long time since it's last use, you would want to check the compression first to make sure the engine is solid, run it if you can, rebuild the carbs, use fresh gas and change the water pump and lower unit fluid. Look like for $1500 or so U.S. dollars, it may be a bit on the high side. But if it runs good and has real low hours, it may be worth it...

thanks for the reply rick,<br /><br />one more question though, is this a real merc engine? or is this really a yamaha in disguise because i know yamaha and merc have been together for quite some time now.....
