Well, bought it ran a bit like it needed tweaking, then it got worse...

I couldn't run it in gear and sounded like it was running on two cylinders.

Brougt it in to the the local marina and found out...

The outdrive was low on oil and some greyness to it and had water in it
They think a bearing in the upper gave way, which bearing who knows they want to charge me another 2 hours in labor to find out.
I told him how many bearings are in the upper?

Anyways..

they checked out the motor and it has a blown head gasket and seems like it slowly blew and it is between the two middle cylinders.
That is not too hard, they want to charge $500 for that. I am pretty sure I can do that one..

Now for the outdrive, I need to wait till the service manager actually sits down with the mechanic and gets a good idea what he is thinking or what he sees.

If the outdrive is shot, well, anyone want a boat?

Anyone know what bearing could of went? Is it worth it to sink another $200 into finding out it maybe a $2000 repair?

Nope, but I am hopeful that it isn't. I should find out this morning what could be the issue.

I just got what they found...

Outdrive..

A bearing let go in the upper and may of spun the race as well. They recommend a minimum of taking it apart, cleaning it out and make sure there is no other damage, plus replace the bearing. Estimated cost $1500.00
Also stated someone was inside and left scars with a hammer and a punch.

Engine:

Head gasket blew, replace head gasket and hope the block and head is still good.

Should I bother to let the previous owner know? I am sure I cannot hold him liable for this damage.

My options are:

Have the marina do it and hope the outdrive is OK and the engine is ok, cost $2000.

I find a used outdrive for a lot less and believe that the drive is OK and do the head gasket myself cost $1000

I get a new SEI outdrive and OMC conversion kit and I do the head gasket myself cost $2000.00

It depends on how much you want to sink into it. Me, I would do the head gasket first & hope for the best before sinking 2k into an SEI conversion. The head gasket is not that big of a deal on your 3.0., if you have a manuel. Good luck.

The marina is going to look a bit deeper into the drive today and what damage is done to the bearing. The bearing is the u-joint shaft bearing. The marina thinks if the race did not spin out or ruin the spot in the housing where it sits, it should be ok.

Yes, the head gasket should not be too hard, it is making sure there is not any grooves in the block.

Update:

Gimble bearing toast, a water hose was splice instead of being replaced, some other items that needs to be done. It would cost $1500 to have it all done, and they are not 100% sure as one of the previous owners were in the drive and did not know what they are doing.

Well, the good news the marina has a replacement used drive in storage and they will get back to me how much that will set me back. They said they would "cut me a great deal" I have heard that before, but we will see.

So far the marina has been honest and aware of what I am wanting, but they move SLOW.

Wow, $1500 to replace a gimbal bearing, water hose & a couple other things?

Sea wolf - includes taking the drive a part and cleaning it, plus replacing a u-joint, bearing, and u-joint bellows.

I paid $1500 for the boat, the drive would cost me $1100.00, gimble bearing replacement plus water hose(I am not sure which one it is) would cost another $750. Head gasket replacement I would do myself, would be about $45 for the head set, plus any machine shop fees.

I could save some money on the gimble bearing and the hose, but I don't know how difficult it is to replace it and I am not sure which water hose they are referring to. Marina wanted to charge me $80 for the gimble bearing alone, I thought that was a bit pricey.

I was thinking of just buying the drive and the parts and doing the rest myself. That could save me a lot.

After grabbing the boat and taking it home to rip the motor apart, I looked at it, and said, "I don't have time for this." Brought the boat back, and told them to go ahead and inspect the head. Hopefully I will be back on the water soon, and feel comfortable with it.

Total investment will be in the boat $4000.00 including price paid for the boat. Still cheaper than a new one.
