I had my four winns over heat and i replaced the impeller. But now it is really hard to crank when cold. It burned up a positive cable on me . When the boat is warmed up it starts easy and runs good. I was told it may be a head gasket because i did have water in my oil and on the back left spark plug. Please any help at all before i pay a shop to work on this .I have only owned the boat for 3 months..

I believe you have probably been given a very good idea of what your problem may be. Pull the plugs then spin the engine over with the starter and see if water is pumped out of the plugholes. If it pumps water it has either a bad head gasket or a bad exhaust manifold.

How will i know if it is the head gasket or the exhaust manifold and is it harder than working on a car motor?

I suspect both are blown. Been there and done that very recently on my 3.0. Work is the same as on a "car" motor.

1. gaskets, but you may need to have them plained on a surface sander if they're not flat.

2. ebay

You will have to pull exhaust manifolds, intake manifold,distributer,ect..
Make sure you use marine head gaskets..
I got all my 4.3 gaskets from Napa, they are made by Sierra..
A leak down test is the way to start.

The only cheap manual would be the Seloc manual# 3404
not the greatest but gives you something to go by..
best to look on Ebay for the original OMC manual..

I bought my gaskets from BRP (Evinrude Johnson dealer). NAPA was way more $ when I checked with them.
