1992 Tracker 17ft with 60 Evinrude

I'm currently looking at a 1992 Tracker with a 60 hp Evinrude motor (1992). 1 Owner who has serviced the engine himself. The boat is in excellent condition, the water test on the motor was great, the motor idled good, hole shot was good, good rpm's on cruising speed (25-30 mph). <br /><br />In reviewing the topics on these posts I didn't see anything specific to 1992 model, however are these motors known to have the oil pumps break-down? Is there anything that anyone can tell me about the motor to look at. <br /><br />Thanks.

Welcome to iboats Mike!<br /><br />Any enigne with a VRO/OMS pump can have a break down of the pump and the break downs are not particluarly common to any one engine. The one thing you need to do is make sure the alarms associated with the pump work.<br /><br />A compression reading on the cylinders would be a good thing to know Mike. Will tell you what shape the engine is in. If the engine runs as good as you posted it did, compressions should be top notch.<br /><br />Also get the maint history on the engine. When was the last time the water pump impeller was changed, carb overhaul, check that the engine is running at a good operating temp. This will all be useful in the future.

In speaking with the owner, the only changes he has ever made on the motor where the plugs, every two years. He winterized and changed the bottom end oil every year and stored inside. No other visits to a marine where done. He does have the original motor manuals and will check on appropriate temp for operation. <br /><br />I will bring to a marina for motor inspection this weekend to have compression tested. <br /><br />Thanks for the info OBJ.

Did the compression testing myself using the instruction on this website (awesome for information). All three cylinders are at 115 psi and based on the posts here there are not true ratings as long as the high and low are within 5% of each other. <br /><br />The motor is 92, however I have a manual that goes up to 91. is there that much difference that i would need to get an 92 manual?<br /><br />Also when I run it with water clips on for a will, and I shut it down, I noticed after I put the boat away that there was a small spot of water about 2 inches in diameter, however it contained black film, Im assuming this is just carb dust because it didn't smell or feel like oil? <br /><br />Any thoughts?
