Re: 1992 Volvo Penta SP Stern Drive Not taking in Water

Hi Mike,

I have exactly the same outdrive and everytime I went to flush it it would be a pain in the ***. Just holding the muffs on softly wouldn't work. I had to get down and really HOLD THEM on tightly and cover up the small hole at the bottom of the drive. Even still it would take a while before water would actually start flushing through. It would take some time and moving around until the majority of the water was going up the drive and not out the sides of the muffs.

To this day I don't think my engine was ever flushing correctly, and well... it's now stuffed so i'm replacing it next week (impeller was broken to pieces also)

I honestly haven't had any real issue running mine on muffs. Done it several times. The temp WILL start to rise above 160 after awhile, though. I shut her down by the time it hits 175 or so, but it takes at least 20 minutes from a cold start for that to happen.

I use the 'rectangular' muffs and have noticed that they seem to seal better if I turn them vertically against the intakes rather than having them point horizontally, if that makes any sense.

I'll try the duct tape method when I haul it next month and see if that improves things.
