1992 XR6 150 Stator Question

Got my replacement stator today. The stator on my motor (XR6 150) has 4 yellow wires (the ac wires that feed the regulators). 2 wires go to one regulator, and 2 to the other.
The replacement stator only has two yellow wires. What gives? Is it the wrong stator or do I splice them together, or do away with one regulator.
The manual isn't very clear. The first breakdown of the schematic shows only 2 yellow leads on the stator, like the one I bought. The charging schematic shows a stator with 4 yellow leads. Any help appreciated.

You got the wrong stator. The 4 yellow wires is wound as 2 20 amp alternators, each goes to it's own regulator. The 2 wire one, if it looks about the same otherwise, is for the infamous water cooled 40 amp regulator, which smokes immediately if cooling gets iffy, and costs an arm and a leg if you can find one. If the new stator is considerably wimpier, it's a 16 amp stator. It can't survive under a 40 amp flywheel.

No, you can't safely drive two regulators with the single 40 amp stator.

hope it helps

Re: 1992 XR6 150 Stator Question

Thanks John. After reading up on it, I figured that's what had happened. The service manual is severely lacking in describing this. It shows both stators, but does not go into details. Looks like it's back to the drawing board. I got the stator for 200 bucks, if anyone needs a two wire, I'll let it go for 100.

Re: 1992 XR6 150 Stator Question

Well, the good news is (I guess) I tested the old stator (resistance per the manual) and it checks good. Unless it's breaking down at RPM, maybe I'll get lucky. I"ve gone ahead and replaced both switches, but haven't had time to muff her and see what I've got. I did change the trigger, but hopefully I just had a bad switch.
I'm learning as I go. So far I'm enjoying working on them. I've never fooled with boat motors, and when I catch myself getting in a hurry, I stop.
