1993 140hp Evinrude, WOT?

Hi i was wondering if someone could tell me what the recommended wide open throttle range should be for a 1993 140HP Evinrude. <br /><br />I am getting 6000RPM (even before it gets to WOT) with a 14.25 x 19" prop which sounds too high.<br /><br />thanx in advnace<br /><br />AK

Look at the back of the tach and make sure its set on position 6. If it's not an OMC/BRP tach lets get it verified with one.<br /><br />6000 isnt all that high for that motor. The limiter is at either 6200 or 6700. What kind of boat is it on?

I'll take a look tonight and make sure its set to 6. Here is a pic of the boat it is on, its a 5.6m fibreglass boat.<br />

It must be a 25" motor with that V6 style lower. It has a strange ratio so it may well be at 6K. Lets verify though just in case.

Here is a better view of the outboard, i'm pretty sure its for a 25" transom. The motor is a V4.<br /><br />

OK, i checked the tacho and it is in the "6" position. <br /><br />I lowered the engine one hole, because i think i was getting ventilation but the engine ventilation plate was still 1 inch above the bottom of the hull. I took it out again and WOT was 6000RPM~6200RPM depending on trim.<br /><br />I have now lowered the engine to the last hole and the ventilation plate is sitting level with the bottom of the hull. I'll test on the water over the weekend.<br /><br />could this be the problem for high WOT? I havent been able to find what the manufacturer recommends as WOT rage <br /><br />appreciate any help<br /><br />AK

The rev limiter is at either 6200 or 6700 depending on which pack you have. I'd have gone the other route and chose a larger / better design prop rather than reduce efficiency. But in reality, no testing is bad.

Is there any way that i can tell which pack i have? <br /><br />I thought i'd get the ventilation plate level with the bottom of the hull befre i explored different props.<br /><br />I'll post results of testing after the weekend.<br /><br />thanx<br /><br />AK

Look at the pack. There are a series of numbers on the side of it. Post them and we'll figure it out.

Well, thats not what I was hoping was there. Sometimes theres a number like 67L for 6700 limiter. However I think your limiter is at roughly 6200. <br /><br />You cant do any harm to the motor with a 6200 rpm set up. I would have left it at the higher setting and looked for a better prop. Most times folks cant get enough rpm and we have to work to get where you were.

i was worried that the reason i was getting high RPM was because i was getting some ventilation, hence i thought i'd try dropping the motor a few holes. <br /><br />In the next 2 days i'll be taking it out for a spin and i'll see what happens and post results and proposed course of action <br /><br />appreciate your thoughts to date <br /><br />AK

Just thought i would give an update on my on water test. <br /><br />With the ventilation plate now level with the bottom of the boat i get no ventilation when i trim and the same goes for tight turns.<br /><br />The engine WOT is now 6000RPM.<br /><br />cheers<br /><br />AK
