I just bought a 1993 150 merc and the tilt & trim sounds like it is binding when I power it up and down, the sound looks like it is coming from the piston bolt shaft that runs by the transom. It makes a popping noise when powered up and down but works fine. sorry but I dont know alot about the parts on a tilt and trim unit. but any help will be appricated.

Tilt the motor all the way up ,then look at the end of your trim rams. You should see a ball bearing like pivot on the end of each of those rams.Is that ball turning freely? If it is not you will hear a sound similar to nails on a chaulkboard.Sound about right?

No thats not it, the noise sounds like its coming from the shaft that holds the dydralic piston. Its a popping as I trim up and down. There are two nuts on each end that tighten down on the motor and then a set of bushings and then the Hydralic sterring bolts on and then a set of airplane nuts on the end.

The support rod that runs through the tilt tube maybe seized.Take off the 4 nuts (2 on each side)from the support brackets and remove those brackets ,then try the trim .
I took the 2 nuts off the Hydralic stering and 2 off the shaft that runs the length of the motor and couldnot remove the brackets. In the process i found a greese fitting I pumped 1 of those little tubes of grease into the shaft put the nuts back un and there is some binding but not as bad. Is there a way to replace the bearings or bushins I need to get a manual for this 150 merc Black Max.

Ok so the sound decrease when you loosened the nuts and greased the tilt tube. You could try getting a piece of wood and hitting that with a hammer to get the brackets off.The reason is that rod ,#12 has to turn freely in the tube it runs through or it will bind. Also those grease fittings only lube the outside off the tilt tube the grease never gets into the id. of that tube so if your rod is siezed into the tube pumping grease into those fittings won't help.

the easiest way is to drill and tap steering brackets for grease fittings and let them rotate around the rod. removing the rod from the tube almost never happens if boat has been in saltwater without ruining it and the tube.
also lube the trim ram bearings reguarly .

Is the binding coming from the hydralic steering arms or the trim shaft sounds like the trim shaft and installing grease fittings in the steering arm wont stop the binding in the trim shaft...but not sure how to fix

I saw a semiliar post show up today on this and did a serch the post is a 90 hp sizuki
