Yep!!I am new here. I sold a larger boat and now have a smaller one with a merc.150 black max. When I recieved the Boat,I took it in to our local pro.and had him check it out.His reports were very good on this engine. When I first start it-you would think I am spraying for the west nile. I called my mech. and he said to turn in the carb.adjustment 1/8th. of a turn. I did and it still smokes. He said don,t worry as they all smoke-now I am talking about a lot of smoke.I have a friend that has twin 150 Yamies and he gets a little smoke (1989's) and they troll great-I mean all day. I think This engine should troll-550 to 600 rpm's-not the case-it will go for a 1/2 hour-loads up and dies. In fact I have to go through a no wake zone for a mile before I hit the lake-the only way I can make it is to pull the prop up and rase the rpm,s.Once I get to the open water the engine runs great. I haven't noticed any over usage of oil,but it does take a lot of gas trolling. I have a kicker-but I still think this thing should troll. The smoke will last for the first 15 min. and then lets up .The engine is in storage at the moment, but would like to have some information on this problem when I take it into the factory authorized
Mech. One other question- Do I have to use Merc.oil,is there really a difference?
Thanks guys---I need your help. Port Huron,Mi.

Mercs. do tend to smoke more than others. Synthetic oil will help alot with the smoking. Also, what number spark plugs are you running?

I would guess the idle circuit is set too rich. I base this on the exessive smoke at idle and the fact that you say it loads up under extended trolling. But remember they always smoke a little more when first started due to "puddling" from the last use. A good warm up at 1500 can help burn that off. (NEVER let it go over 2000 in neutral, running it up with no load is very bad.)

No, you don't have to use Mercury brand oil in that. Any good quality, ashless, TCW-3 will do. I use "Pennzoil Synthetic Blend" sold at most Wal-Marts for about 9 bucks a gallon. Best "bang for the buck" I could find out there.

-W

I will have to check the spark plugs, maybe a hotter plug. I have to think it is in the carbs. because of the way she loads up. I am looking around for a manual.I have heard that some by pass the oil injection, I don,t want to do that if I don't have too.

You should be running surface gap NGK # BU8H. A BU9H or BU10H would be a little hotter. Also, check for any air leaks anywhere, as they will cause that problem. Especially around carb gaskets. Make sure they are tight.

Yes I do. But it's only a 91' 70 HP rude. Trolls fine. Those big HP's are not really meant to troll with. That's why most use a kicker. Try going up one degree hotter on the plugs and see what happens.

RB, Thanks for the come back....I have a friend that has 2 Yamaha 150's on a Grady and they really troll fine. That's Why I was thinking This thing should troll. Like I said I do have a kicker. After I put the boat in I have to go about a mile before I hit the open water. This is a no wake zone and have the problem of going slow in this part of the river. Hey I just got back from your part of the country-was in Dyersburg Tn. with some friends for a Duck Hunt. We really had a good time and a heck of a duck shoot.
