I'm restoring the interior of a 17' Sunbird. I started with the upholstery. All of the wood on the back side of the cushions and the side rails was rotten. I replaced the wood with plastic. It took 2, 4x8 sheets of pvc board. Neat stuff easy to work with, won't rot, but it's expensive. $140.00 a sheet. Next I've pulled the carpet replaced some rotten wood around the ski locker. I've found a little bit of soft wood on the underside of the floor above the gas tank. I'm wanting to recarpet and go boating, am I making a mistake by ignoring this scenario?
The stringers appear to be okay.
Thanks

I'll just say what I expect you already know. If it's soft now, it won't improve with age. You may as well fix it while you have it open if you plan on keeping the boat.

I've opened a messy can of worms with this. Rotten wood in stringer and cross beam near transom. Very hard to work in there because of gas tank and its just a hard area to get a saw or install new wood. Any ideas?

I guess it's decision time for you. You could close it up and 1. use it until it falls apart or, 2. sell it.

If you plan on keeping it maybe it's time to suck it up and re-do the floor and whatever. There's plenty of tech help here should you decide to fix it. I guess it all depends on $ and how much you like your boat.
