1993 200 XRi starter help

I have a 1993 200 XRi, Got back from a great day on the water last night and went to flush the motor, but the engine wouldn't start. The starter spins, but does not lift up to enguage the flywheel. Is my starter shot? Can someone offer some advice on what to do to debug this?

Also, I'm in need of a good service manual for this thing. Any advice on what you prefer?

Could be low voltage getting to the starter (Batteries low, loose cables, defective or dirty cables or connections) or the bendix on the end of the starter is bad, maybe just rusty????

Get an OEM manual if you want the best info out there.

Check all your cables as suggested and clean and lube the shaft that the bendix rides up and down on.

Thanks for the advice. The battery is fully charged and as far as I can tell all the cabling looks good. although I am going through all that again.

Probably a dumb question, but what's the bendix?

It's that round gear thingy on the starter that is supposed to jump up and engage the teeth of the flywheel to turn the motor.

Gotcha .... but what's a thingy?

I have gone through the cables again and tried jump starting at the motor with the same results. Is it difficult to replace the bendix?

Also, do you know any good sources for the OEM manual?
