Hello to all,

I have been from mechanic to mechanic trying to figure out the puzzle with my engine. I have a 225HP 1993 Evinrude V6 that was running perfect. All of a sudden it is acting up. Below are the symptoms.

  • Max Speed now is 34 mph, Before was 44
  • Max RPM with Engine trimmed up and trim tabs all the way up is 4500 RPM, before was 5600 RPM
  • Compression is good, all 6 cylinders are firing correctly
  • Carbs have all been cleaned
  • Coils and magnets replaced

The other major thing is that to get the boat on plane it takes about 10 to 12 seconds, before I used to get it up in about 6 max. To put it in what it feels like, its like a car taking off in first gear, you have all the torque and pop but until you shift into second you dont get moving. My boat feels like it stays stuck in 1 st gear and then eventually it starts to build speed. Any ideas???

might be the fuel pump. it may be getting weak and not able to keep up at higher rpms. i am going through something similar on my 200 ocean pro. was running ok but not reaching max rpm. a couple of weeks ago coming back in from a trip my motor started acting like i was running out of fuel. when i backed off the throttle it ran fine and i idled for a while. when i went to try and get on plane again it would go to about 2500 rpm and bog like it was running out of fuel. i am rebuilding my pump and will run it again this week sometime and see what happens!

slipping prop would usually jump to higher rpm not lower.

Miamifisher, you may have a loose Timing Wheel. Find a wrench who has service bulletin #2254 R.1 if you want to check it.

CaptRoob, Your motor is probably going into S.L.O.W. mode.

If it was in my shop I would lake test it @ max throttle and push in on choke, if it picks up rpm=fuel pump service time.If engine die down 2 check would be to see in hub magnet has moved on flywheel. Usually when these are loose and move timing is way high and pistons start melting.

Many thanks to everyone for the quick replies, I am heading out this weekend and will try some of the suggestions. Oh yeah also I forgot to mention, we sat for while catching bait, and shut the engine down for about a half hour. When I went to prime for fuel, the lines were empty and every time you would squeeze you wouldnt feel gas going through, but the engine still started. I will keep you guys posted!

How old is the fuel line and primer bulb?
I'm also curious about the gas tank. From the size of the motor, I'm assuming it's a built in one, so any idea ho old it is, material it's made from? I know the newer fuels with ethanol are causing problems with older tanks, especially fiberglass ones. This could be totally not the problem or related at all, but is worth exploring. Do you have a fuel/water separator?

I'm also leaning toward an ethanol issue. It would be worth looking at the anti-siphon valve if you have a built in tank.

Hello to all,

I ended up repowering my boat with new 250 etec...problem solved...the old engine siezed up and we found the upper bearing of the crankshaft basically exploded, and the engine wouldn't turn. So now the rest of it is being sold for parts which were all new!! If interested give me a buzz at 305-510-4087.. Randy
