I am in process of getting a 93 proline center console boat. It does not currently have an engine. It had a 200hp evinrude on it. I have a jonson 120hp sitting in my garage doing nothing. So the question is will that motor push this boat? If not what is the smallest outboard I can run on this boat? Speed is not important to me if it will do 25 to 30mph that will work. I will upgrade to a larger engine later when I have some money. So can I get away with the 120 for a while?

I have to ask.... does your hull have a Max HP sticker? That will be most of the info you will need. If 200 was the max, you will be slightly underpowered with a 120 but that's not to say it won't work (get on plane). If max is 250, you might not be happy.

I don't have the boat here yet, so I cant look. I imagine max might be more since it has a stainless engine bracket that will hold 2 outboards. It also has a 140 gal gas tank.

I'm starting to like this boat and don't even know what it looks like! Pics!

Having the engine already, try it out. If boat won't be heavily cargo or passengers used, a 120 HP will push it nicely, even get on plane. You could optimize prop pitch for engine to rev near its max wot factory stated rpm. That way engine will work happily and stress free on that boat.

My neighbor has the 21 foot version of that boat with a 150HP Merc on it. it has plenty of power. I therefore think that 120HP motor would work OK, on that 23 footer. I would think you would get 27-30MPH out of her.

Cool. Thanks! I guess I will put it on there and give it a shot.

Al I can say is ruff, ruff, ruff......a boat designed for 250 hp isn't going to get it with 120 Hp. You'll be going backwards in a following sea

Definitely a boat designed to run with a 250 HP is in accordance with max number of stated passengers, if running a 120 HP will need to be lightly loaded to perform well. A matter to try it out. Go for a wot spin and check max rpm achieved lightly loaded. Play with prop pitches to increase top rpm to factory specs if needed.

Only because you already have the motor, and it's temporary, give it a try.

do we know that it's designed for 250? I didn;t see that anywhere. anyway, just look at new prolines or other similar CC's at that length, they are fairly generic.

I have a 21' similar hull* with a 150 and it does fine; I wouldn't choose anything smaller. Your question is different since you have the motor and found a hull without a motor.

So keep your load light (don't fill the tank), work the trim, be patient and don't stray out where if you have to get home in a hurry you can't--but that size boat is a safe hull for bad conditions. Wet, but safe.

Do take it out when the weather is bad but close to home to test its capability against adverse conditions.

Where will you be using it? How many people? For what?

A word about ratings: the rating is max safe HP. the standard rule of not going less than 70% of the rating is generally a good one. However, there are some boats like bass boats that allow motors way bigger than you ever need, so in that respect the rating is deceptive unless top speed is important.

And speaking of which, that is a salt water coastal hull, where top speed is seldom important to boaters in that environment. "going 50+" is a lake boat thing.

*Some of the prolines had a flatter hull than the typical deep V CC and therefore could run a smaller motor.

Thanks for the info. I am working on a deal to get a 175hp. I imagine that should do the trick? By the way this boat is a 1994 Proline with a solid transom and a stainless engine bracket. It has a 140gal tank.

In that case, you would be a lot happier with a 225HP

I hear ya but the previous owner had a 200 on it with no problems. I can get the 175 cheap that's why I would do it. I figure that will be powerful enough to do what I want and probably better on fuel.

Re: 1993 23ft cc proline outboard ?????

well the unknown (to us) is "do what I want."

It may be a little better on fuel if you keep it slow but an underpowered boat is an inefficient boat so your savings may be negligable. Also there is a point where going slower to a destination can use more fuel than going faster--simply a factor of the motor turning for more time.

Then again, if you want something to go out short distances by yourself in favorable conditions (eg not against strong wind/current) on a 1/4 tank then it could suit you very well. Something to go out away from shore to do some spot fishing. I know lots of people here in that profile. After all, in places with low HP restrictions people run some big boats on small motors to have the room aboard.
