1993 40hp Evinrude

Engine will start and run at high rpms. When I throttle down it will stall at 1000 rpms. What could be the problem? Thanks for any advice.

Carbs need cleaning very probably.

Does operating the primer pump (choke) help it to run. If it does it pretty well confirms the need for a carb clean.

I tried operating the primer, did not help. Going to replace the plugs and spray carberator with a cleaner and see if that helps. Thanks.

Spraying carb cleaner into the throat of a carb does absolutely no good since it does not get into the internals of the carb where the problem really lies. If you want to take the lazy way out, buy a can of SeaFoam and add it to the fuel. That at least will get inside the carb.
