1993 50hp Johnson - Thick black sludge in lower unit... and it stinks!

I serviced the lower unit in my 93 50HP Johnson outboard towards the end of last year. I put all new seals everywhere, new water pump, etc. I took it out 3-4 times and put maybe 4-5 hours on the motor. I think I may have stripped a gear or something the last time I had it out so I just pulled the lower unit to inpsect it at all the oil in the lower unit came out as a thick black sludge and smelled so foul I had to put it outside as it was permeating from the garage into the house. I am not even sure how to describe the smell, but it was strong and bad. The oil that came out of it when I serviced it the first time was nothing like this.
What would cause this? Can anyone help?

When gearcase oil turns black, it is worn out.

The black vomit smelling sludge is from lack of maintence!

You might want to consider using high performance gear oil. In any event, make sure that the oil is high viscosity marine gear oil.

Seriously? How can it be lack of maintenance when it is new with only a couple hours on it?

it is breaking up the old sluge in the case.

I will add that in my opinion....even non-black used gear oil smells horrible.
