hello, was hoping some of you experts could point me in the right direction. i've got a 50 hp johnson outboard and it will only run with the primer switch flipped up and it's spewing gas everywhere. it wont run with the switch flipped downward. i've attached a picture i took tonight. if anyone has ever experienced this or knows what my problem could be i would greatly appreciate it, thank you

By the looks of it as you didn't give a discription as to where the fuel is coming from, it looks like it is coming from one of two places.

1. The Flat solenoid gasket OMC#0333448

or

2. The Manual Valve oring OMC# 0331365

There should be 4 phillips head screws on the top of the solenoid plate. Make sure they are all there and tight. If they are there and tight I would replace the 2 parts I mentioned above.

Now if the solenoid is cracked then it will have to be replaced. OMC#0434762

Good luck let us know what happens

thanks for the response, i surely appreciate it. would a leak here cause the engine not to run when the primer solenoid switch is in the "auto" position where you use the key switch to prime?

The primer solenoid. When the red handle is in the correct position it only puts fuel in as the key is pressed. When it is put in the other psoition it automatically dumps fuel past the carbs into the cylinders. So if you are having to turn the handle out of its normal position you need to start looking at rebuilding your carbs as you have a fuel delivery problem.

you've been great help chad, i took the primer solonoid off and the red lever had a crack on it, replaced that whole valve $8, and it would crank but not run, took the carbs off and cleaned them and now it cranks and runs fine. do you happen to know about how many rpm's this engine should be idling at?

The only true way to set the idle is the boat has to be in the water.
Put in forward gear but do not apply any throttle just shift into gear.
RPM's should be between 700 and 800 with the boat in gear.
When it is running on the ear muffs it will be it should run about 1000 rpms due to no back pressure on the exhaust.
